Re: Carpet Cleaning Las Vegas:

Quoted from the EPA's website: (page link)

"Carpet also acts as a reservoir for dust, dirt, pollen, mold spores,
pesticides and other materials which may originate indoors or be
brought into the indoor environment from outside. If kept very clean
from the time it is installed, carpet can trap a significant amount of
particles, which can be removed through regular and effective
vacuuming.  However, inadequate maintenance can allow large quantities
of dust and debris to build up in carpet. Some studies indicate that
poorly maintained carpet can release significant quantities of particles
into the air during the course of daily activity. In addition, young
children may play on carpet where they may be more likely to come into
contact with contaminants that have not been properly removed through
regular and effective vacuuming.

It cannot be over-emphasized that proper cleaning and maintenance is a critical component of any flooring system.
To help ensure longer life, maintain appearance, and help protect
indoor air quality, carpet requires regular vacuuming with a
well-functioning vacuum cleaner equipped with strong suction and a
high-performance filtration bag and periodic wet extraction cleaning.
CRI has established a Green Label Vacuum Cleaner Indoor Air Quality
Testing Program to identify vacuum cleaners that effectively remove
soil, contain dust within the filtration bag and the machine itself,
keeping it out of the air, and which don't damage the carpet."

Truck mount carpet cleaner (page link)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A truck mounted carpet cleaner is a carpet and upholstery cleaning unit that is generally mounted to the floor of a van or trailer. Its cleaning method is hot water extraction.
The operator would park the van near the premises and connect the
vacuum hose and solution line hose into the machine, bring the hoses
into the building and connect a carpet cleaning wand to the end of the hoses

Benefits to the operator and the client

Typical small machines start off at 16 horse power and range up to
anything to 60 horse power. Van powered P.T.O. units are available on
the market.

Truck Mounted units heat their water by one of two methods:

Heat Exchanger This heating method uses heat naturally
generated by the normal operation of the engine and in some cases,
vacuum pump components of the system. Typically, water is routed through
a "heat exchanger", which consists of two separate sections. In one
section, the heat is routed. In the second section, the water passes
through. The two sections share two sides of common surfaces inside the
exchanger and therefore heat is transferred from the "heat side" section
with higher temperature to the "solution side" section with lower
temperature.

There are two basic kinds of heat exchangers. One, named, "shell and
coil", has fluid passing through a coil of tubing which is contained in a
"shell", or container through which heat is routed. The other, called,
"shell and tube", contains several parallel tubes running from one end
of the "shell" to the other. In the shell and tube configuration , heat
travels through the parallel tubes and water travels through the shell.

Fossil Fuel This heating method uses a separate water heater that uses either propane or heating oil as the fuel source
to generate heat. This type of unit is usually less expensive to
purchase but ultimately more expensive due to the weekly cost of a
secondary fuel.

Traditionally, Truck mounted carpet cleaning machines have been more
powerful than portable carpet cleaning units. Recent changes in
technology have allowed portable manufacturers to approach the
previously unsurpassed power of a truck mounted carpet cleaning
machines. The primary advantage lies with the user. The quick setup and
relatively easy use of the truck mount makes it among most professional
cleaners. Regrettably the cost, usually between $10,000.00 to $35,000.00
US, makes it cost prohibitive for many professionals. Currently (ref?)
it is estimated that only 28% of professional carpet cleaners use Truck
Mounted Carpet Cleaning Machines.

Most carpet manufacturers recommend a regular clean up by a "hot
water extraction" which is the method for carpet cleaning that is
employed by the truck mounted units.

Hot water extraction (page link)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hot Water Extraction (HWE) method, is a method used in chemistry for extraction and for "steam cleaning" (e.g. carpets as listed by the IICRC to be the primary method for cleaning carpets. Residential, and Commercial). The pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) process uses a combination of high water pressure for agitation, and hot water to increase reaction rate.

"Steam Cleaning"

Though commonly called "Steam Cleaning", no actual steam is involved
in the HWE cleaning process, apart from steam that may escape
incidentally from hot water. When the cleaning solution comes in contact
with the carpet/rug, it is anywhere between 120-250 degrees Fahrenheit,
according to the heat available from the cleaning unit. For instance,
in a modern truck-mounted
carpet cleaning machine, water can be heated to 300+ degrees (F), but
after passing through high pressure steel braided hose and several manifolds, the water loses some of its heat.

The typical cleaning method involves a preconditioning of the soiled surface with an alkaline (7 or above on the pH scale) agent, followed by light agitation with a grooming brush and appropriate dwell time. Next, the surface is passed over several times with a cleaning tool (either manual or
automatic) to thoroughly rinse out the pre-conditioner and, using an
acetic acid solution, lower the pH of the fibers to a neutral state. Finally, the surface is dried sufficiently to avoid any possibility of saturation.

Truck Powered Carpet Cleaning (page link)

When you have your carpets cleaned, you want to use the most powerful
systems on the market to achieve the very best results. The best and
most powerful systems out there are ones powered by the cleaning truck
or van. They produce much more heat, vacuum and pressure. All of this
translates into an exceptional cleaning job when coupled with an
experienced cleaning technician. There are two kinds of truck powered
carpet cleaning machines. You have PTO units powered by the van and
Slide In units powered by a separate engine. Both work well, but there
are some differences.

PTO units get the power to supply the machinery directly from the
engine of the van or truck. They typically use a hydraulic system to
transfer the power from the engine to the cleaning equipment. The
benefit of these systems to the operator is that they are very reliable.
You only have one engine to maintain and it is a tried and tested
automobile engine. The disadvantage to this system is that these
machines generally produce slightly less heat. They still provide good
cleaning temperatures, but they are typically not as hot as Slide Ins.

Slide In units are powered by a separate engine. The engine is
directly coupled to a vacuum blower either with a clutch or through the
use of drive belts. These machines are powered by a 2, 3 or 4 cylinder
engine ranging anywhere from 20 to 60 horsepower. Because manufacturers
can harness engine exhaust heat, these machines generally achieve higher
water temperatures. The downside to Slide In machines is that they are
more prone to mechanical failures and require more maintenance.

Both styles of van or truck powered machines are more than adequate
to clean carpet. The average consumer will not notice a difference
between the two. Just choose a company that uses one of these systems
that has a good reputation.
